Unique Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder
Posted on November 27, 2008Keeping your wild bird feeders safe from the furry little backyard bandits, also known as squirrels, is not an easy task. Squirrels are crafty little creatures and will find a way to work around most of your efforts to prevent them from raiding your bird feeders.
The Squirrel Proof Squirrel-Be-Gone wild bird feeder from Duncraft offers an ingenious solution to the problem. The feeder has an outer cage that is spring loaded. When wild birds land on the perches or the outer cage, their weight is not enough to overcome the springs. But when a squirrel jumps or climbs onto the cage, the outer cage section lowers and chew-proof leaves cover all of the food ports. This prevents the squirrel bandit from stealing your expensive wild bird seed. When the squirrel jumps off, the cage raises and the feed ports are once again available for your backyard birds.
We particularly like this design because it looks good and blends well with the outdoor environment. if you have a serious squirrel problem, we suggest using the Squirrel-Be-Gone bird feeder in conjunction with a diversion device, such as a squirrel feeder and your neighborhood squirrels will stop trying to raid your bird feeders. If they cannot get at your wild bird food, but you are offering food that squirrels prefer in another part of your back yard, the problem is solved.
The Squirrel-Be-Gone wild bird feeder pictured here is offered by Duncraft. It has 6 feeding ports and metal perches. The feeder holds 4 lbs of seed. The tube is 3 inches wide and the feeder is 18-1/2 inches tall. The springs are adjustable for various weights. A spring loaded cap design keeps squirrels out.
At less than $30, the Squirrel-Be-Gone is very inexpensive when compared to other squirrel-proof bird feeder designs.
