The Sopranos Complete Series

Posted on December 6, 2009

This is not exactly a gadget gift, but most gadget lovers do like the Sopranos. You can not get the entire series including all of the award-winning Sopranos episodes on a 30-disc DVD set.

If you are a fan of the Sopranos, you will love watching the entire series from start to finish. With the newer release of the series, HBO has lowered the price of the complete set by about $100, which makes it a terrific bargain and a great gift idea.

The Sopranos has got to be the most popular mobster series ever to hit television. The show stars James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, one of the leaders of the New Jersey crime syndicate. The internal power struggles, ruthlessness, business logic and codes that crime syndicate members live by are all integrated into this very entertaining series. But while Tony Soprano is indeed ruthless and cunning, he does have a warm and occasionally sensitive side. The series is built on very strong character roles played by a wide range of talent.

Every season in the series is good and builds on the events of the previous season. Opponents are beaten, murdered and buried in strange places as the Sopranos crime family maintains its grip on the area. Tony’s monstrous mother plays a strong role in the first few seasons, and she even condones having her son Tony murdered. Tony’s uncle, Junior Soprano, is indicted by the Federal government and placed under house arrest while awaiting trial. Tony continues his covert sessions with Dr. Melfi, but as with many secrets, the information eventually gets out, which threatens to ruin Tony’s grip on his ruthless organization.

The Sopranos: The Complete Series on DVDAs FBI agents continue to investigate and try to infiltrate the mob family, some members of the group are trapped into providing information. When discovered, regardless of how close they are to other members, it’s time to feed the fishies. Loyalty reins supreme in this mob family, and those who betray the trust of the group, know exactly how they will end up.

Like all made for television series, there are good and not-so-good episodes in each season. Overall, the continuity of the story and depth of the characters is excellent, and James Gandolfini’s portrayal of Tony Soprano is superb. We can’t think of anyone who could have done it better.

We have watched the entire series of episodes and really enjoyed it. The first two seasons were probably the best due to their intensity, but the remaining four seasons (there were six seasons in all) were not slackers. There are two bonus discs in this set that include cast auditions, an explanation of the music selected and the meaning behind it, many lost scenes saved from the editing room and stories about the making of the Sopranos series.

All-in-all, this is a great televisions series that is already becoming a classic. If you enjoyed the Sopranos on HBO, you need to add this to your collection. If you have never seen the Sopranos, you need to watch this series.
