Blu-ray 3D is the newest and thus far the best approach for rendering 3D effects in your home theater or on your HDTV. The effects with this technology are very close and sometimes superior to that found in movie theaters running 3-D movies.

Blu-ray 3D is not the same as 3-D on Blu-ray or Blu-ray with 3-D. Most of those movies are anaglyph 3D movies, which means that you will need to wear glasses with differently colored lenses. Blu-ray 3D is a new method of displaying 3D movies that was approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association in December of 2009. It is far superior to the anaglyph approach to 3-D.

Most 3D HDTVs use liquid crystal shutter glasses, which look like sunglasses. Each lens with shutter glasses alternates between transparent and opaque in synchronization with left-eye and right-eye perspectives being displayed on the HDTV screen. This happens so fast that the user never sees the shuttering effect. A few newer 3D HDTV models use special polarized glasses.

In order to view Blu-ray 3D, you need an HDTV with Blu-ray 3D capabilities, as well as a Blu-ray 3D player. You cannot view these movies in 3D using your old home theater equipment, although you can view the movies in 2D with a standard 2D HDTV and standard Blu-ray player. Blu-ray 3D movies will play in standard 2D on a non-3D Blu-ray player. This means that you can buy these movies now if you plan to upgrade your home theater components in the future. If you like 3D movies, this can be a wise investment in the future.

The new home theater components capable of displaying Blu-ray 3D movies in 3D started to arrive on the market in spring of 2010. Almost all major television manufacturers now offer these components, so if you are planning to upgrade your home theater equipment, look for components that work with 3D.
