Livescribe Pulse Smart Pen

Posted on February 14, 2011

The Livescribe 2 GB Pulse Smartpen is a nice gadget gift for someone who takes notes in school lectures or meetings and not only wants a digital copy of what has been written, but also an audio copy of what was discussed or presented.

A smart pen is a pen that adds intelligent features in addition to being a writing instrument. The Livescribe 2 GB Pulse Smartpen adds some pretty slick features to their pen. The 2 GB model holds 2 gigabytes of internal memory that is used to capture up to 200 hours of recorded audio or up to 32,000 pages of written notes. That is a lot of information to store in a device as small as a pen.

In order to capture notes, the Livescribe requires the use of special paper purchased in a spiral notebook. The paper has a pattern of small microdots that are used to record the position and movement of the pen. This is a real ink pen, so whatever you write is also captured on the paper. There is a USB connection that is used to transfer notes and audio to a Mac or PC and an audio jack for playing back audio through an amplified device or ear buds.

The audio is synchronized with the written notes. You can go back to your written notes and tap on a word to play back the audio portion of a lecture or meeting. Written notes can be exported to a PDF file for easy distribution. The audio portion can also be distributed.
