Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Knife
Posted on February 14, 2011If you or someone you know you loves camping, hiking, hunting or exploring wilderness areas and the great outdoors, take a look at the Gerber 31-000751 Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Knife. It is an affordable survival knife that may give you an edge when you need it most.
Bear Grylls is a former member of the British SAS. He is also a survival expert and the star of Discovery Channel’s survival series called Man vs. Wild.
The Gerber Survival Series Ultimate Knife features a 4.75-inch partially serrated high carbon stainless steel drop point blade with a textured rubberized grip to prevent slippage. It’s overall length is 10 inches and it weights in at 11.2 ounces. The survival knife comes with a military grade nylon sheath.
The knife has several important survival tools built into the sheath. First, there is a ferrocerium rod fire starter. This is the same material used in flints found in lighters–only this rod is much larger. Scraping a striker notch in the back of the knife blade against the ferrocerium rod produces a shower of sparks for lighting dry tinder to start a fire. Second, there is a diamond sharpener integrated into the sheath. Third, an emergency whistle is attached to a lanyard cord.
The survival knife comes with Bear’s “Priorities of Survival” mini pocket guide that offers important survival tips, just in case you need them in a serious situation. The Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Knife typically sells for less than $60, which makes it an affordable gadget gift for your favorite outdoor enthusiast.
We found some mixed user reviews on Amazon regarding this knife, but from reading the reviews, it looks like the people who complained were not using the knife as intended. Nonetheless, the new model is supposed to be beefed up to address these issues. Check out the reviews on Amazon and judge for yourself.
