Why Do People Buy Gadgets? The Gadget Buyers Profile
Most gadget lovers are not geeks who spend most of their time with their eyes focused less than twelve inches from a computer screen. True gadget lovers are all types of everyday people who really enjoy using an innovative product for a range of reasons. The nice thing about owning gadgets is that you do not have to be technically inclined nor do you need to be wealthy to be a gadget lover. Gadgets come in a wide variety of products and price ranges.
Gadgets come in all types of products. Some gadgets are mechanical devices, while others are consumer electronics products. A gadget can control your electronics products, improve your home theater enjoyment, make gardening tasks a bit easier, or help you clean the house or polish the car.
So what type of person buys gadgets? There are several personalities that are more prone than others to buy gadgets of all types.
The Convenience Lover
The convenience lover buys gadgets simply because something about the gadget leads to time savings or takes the drudgery out of a task. My wife is an avid gadget buyer who doesn’t focus on the price as much as the ability of the product to simplify her life. I often joke that she would spend $1000 for $1 worth of convenience. In reality, that may not be an accurate description because she is very frugal with most of her spending habits. But when she sees a product in a brick-and-mortar store, a catalog or in an online store, and she thinks that product will make some aspect of her life simpler, she just has to have it! Our home has always contained a large collection of gardening tools, bath items, kitchen gadgets, special tools used for cleaning, etc.
The True Technology Fanatic
This type of buyer just has to have the newest and most innovative products as soon as they hit the market. Once they are focused on a new gadget, price is not an important factor. Whether is just a personal fascination with a gadget, or the need to impress others, the true technology fanatic must have the latest and greatest gadget available. The true technology fanatic will meticulously research the technology and is an avid reader of product reviews. The goal is to select the best product that will remain the best product, at least for a while.
Fascination With Consumer Electronics Technology
While gadgets do come in all types of products, this type of gadget lover just wants the best in home theater, stereo equipment, home automation controls, cell phones and portable audio and video. The fascination for most products tends to be short-lived, because consumer electronics continually evolves at a rapid pace. There are an almost endless number of new products entering the market.
The Early Adopter
These are the people that the manufacturers and merchants realy love. An early adopter has to have the latest and greatest gadgets as soon as they hit the market. These people are fascinated with technology and love to experiment with new ideas and innovations.
The Uniqueness Buyer
The Uniqueness Buyer tends to like fairly rare and obscure gadgets. He or she is more of a collector of one-of-a-kind or gadgets that are not easy for others to find. While these gadget lovers may own iPods, their most precious gadgets are those that no one else can find. Some real hard-core Uniqueness Buyers scour antique sales, estate sales and farm sales, simply looking for a handy gadget that went out of production 50+ years ago. Some times it’s fun just trying to figure out what these old contraptions do. There are some interesting collector gadgets to be found, because gadgets have been around as long as people have been on this planet.
