Flip Video, which makes a series of pocket camcorders, recently released the best of their series thus far. The Flip Video Ultra HD is their second high definition model, which records 120 minutes of video in 720p.

The Flip Video Ultra HD has moved another notch closer to perfection in an inexpensive pocket camcorder. Like the standard Flip Ultra pocket camcorder, the Ultra HD stores a full two hours of video on internal memory. The internal memory has been expanded to 8 gigabytes to accommodate the greater storage needs of high definition.

The use of internal memory means that there are no memory cards or tapes to deal with. In our opinion, this is both a plus and a minus. While it is easy to offload stored video to a laptop or PC, we would still prefer seeing removable memory cards so that users would not have to be concerned about running out of recording time while traveling or on vacation. Thus far, all Flip Video pocket camcorders use internal memory.

The Ultra series has a two inch wide LCD screen to view videos that you have recorded. They also feature one-touch recording and digital zoom.

One real big plus with this new camcorder model is a nice feature where you can use either a rechargeable battery pack, which charges from a USB port, or from standard AA batteries. Older flip models used an internal lithium ion rechargeable battery. The standard Flip Ultra added the ability to use AA batteries. The addition of the rechargeable battery pack, which also charges fro a USB port, is a nice feature because additional rechargeable battery packs can be carried with you or you could just use off-the-shelf AA batteries. USB charging adapters for a car are available so that you can charge your Flop Ultra HD when you do not have access to a PC, such as when you are traveling.

The new model is slightly larger and slightly heavier than other Flip Video models that use the internal lithium ion battery, but that is to be expected to accommodate the larger AA batteries.

All Flip Video pocket camcorders have pre-installed FlipShare software that allows you to transfer videos, edit videos, capture still shots from video clips, and upload videos to video sharing sites, such as MySpace or You Tube. The software works with either a Mac or a PC.

One unique feature of all Flip Video pocket camcorders is the flip-out USB port that connects easily to most PCs and laptops. The Ultra model comes with a cloth slip case to protect the camcorder. If you decide to buy this product from Amazon or another major online retailer, be sure to read the reviews and user comments. Some of the optional cases being sold as an accessory are reported to be poor quality or a improper fit for the camcorder.
