American Red Cross FR150 Solar & Self-Powered Emergency Radio

Posted on August 14, 2008

While there are several low cost emergency radios on the market, very few compare to the American Red Cross FR150. This emergency radio has everything you need when a natural disaster or emergency situation arises.

First, the radio covers AM, FM and all seven NOAA weather bands. Many small emergency weather radios only cover a single NOAA weatherband. This one covers all of them and each can be selected individually with a slide switch.

Second, one of the best features is the ability to power the radio in any emergency. A hand-crank dynamo charges the on-board rechargeable batteries. There is also an array of amorphous solar cells that can keep the radio charged whenever the sun is shining. Another alternative allows you to use an optional AC adapter. An AC adapter would be a nice addition if you want to leave the radio on to monitor an approaching storm, or if you want to use it as a desk top radio in your bedroom or office.

Third, the American Red Cross FR150 emergency radio contains a bright white 3-LED flashlight built into the side. This means that you will never be without a flashlight when you need it. This very nice device covers a lot of bases when an emergency situation hits your home or family.

The FR150 is solidly built and its compact design (1.8 x 5 x 2.4 inches, 10 ounces) fits nicely in a coat pocket or a backpack. It is available in red or white. This the perfect all-around radio for camping, hiking, picnics, a day at the beach or for an emergency preparedness kit. It has a built-in speaker, but can be used with an optional earphone.

The American Red Cross emergency radio is priced right at less than $40. Give the fact that natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, major storms and other calamities can occur almost anywhere, it is a good idea to keep a radio like this in your car or on a shelf, because you never know when you will need it. There are times when your family’s survival may depend on it.

We found the quality of this radio to be very good and far superior to other compact emergency radios on the market. The radio is also sold as the Eton Microlink FR150 and the Grundig Microlink FR150.
